(Dad and son David in the car after David's football practice)
David- Dad, I've been thinking a lot about my future. I don't think that football is what I want to do.
Dad- Son, what do you mean? Football is your future. I thought you were going to try to get a scholarship.
David- Well that is not what I want to do now. I have something that I want to continue doing.
Dad- What is it?
David- Music. I want to be a drummer. My band is getting really good I could have a real future in music.
Dad- Drumming? I thought that was a hobby.
David- It was at first. Now that has changed drumming is what I want to do. My band is getting really good. If we keep working hard, maybe we could a record deal and become very successful.
Dad- What are you talking about? What happened to you wanting to play football? I thought that was your dream. Did your "band" friends pressure you into making this decision?
David- What? No. No one changed my mind. I liked playing football, but as a hobby. I don't want football to be my future. I love music dad. The truth is, I never wanted to play college football I just wanted to make you proud and that's why I stuck with it. You played football in high school and college and you tell your friends that I will be like you but better. I don't want to do that though. I am sorry dad, I really am.
Dad- Wow, that's a lot to swallow. I don't know what to say. I am kinda in shock. I wish I knew you felt this way.
David- I didn't know how to tell you. I didn't want to hurt you. I mean you are always pushing me to do my best, so I tried my best but for you, not me. I wasn't happy.
Dad- Well, I pushed you because I thought that you loved football, and sometimes kids need to be pushed to do they're best. Listen I wouldn't want you to be playing football if that's not what you want.
David- I am surprised that your not mad. Why aren't you?
Dad- When I was younger, around your age, a junior in high school. My father wanted me to be a lawyer or a doctor. He didn't want me to play football and get hurt. Or play football and have nothing come out of it. But I son, I wanted to be in the NFL. So I played football made it to college on a scholarship and in a college game... that's, when my knee got messed up. Sometimes I think, "Well if I would have studied to become a lawyer or a doctor, I wouldn't have to walk with a cane. My knee wouldn't be messed up." But I do not regret playing football, that was... is my passion. If music is your passion then do what you want David. What you feel is right.
David- Thanks for not being tough on me dad. A lot of my friends' dads would freak out if they wanted to quit football.
Dad- Well, they're dads aren't your dad.
(David and his friend Chris in the locker room)
David- I'm thinking about not playing football next year.
Chris- What? Senior year and your not going to play football. What are you thinking. That will completely mess up your chances of getting a scholarship.
David- I don't want to play football. I like football but if I get a scholarship I'll have to play in college and I really do not want to play football, or get a scholarship for something I don't have an interest in.
Chris- Dude, your going to have a harder time getting into college.
David- I might not go to college and if I do. It wont be from a football scholarship. Someone else will get that scholarship. Someone who loves football.
Chris- OK, whatever. I gotta go. My dads probably waiting for me outside.
David- Later.
(David talking to Joe on the phone)
Joe- Dude, Charlies dad knows the owner of the Roxbury. He got us a gig! Friday night.
David- Sweet! That's awesome! Have you called Bob and Steve yet?
Joe- No, your the first one I've called. I'll call Steve and you can call Bob. OK?

Bob- I'm calling my parents too (Bob calls his parents and tells them the radio station that the song is on)
Joe- Will someone call my parents for me? I don't want to cause I'm driving.
Steve- OK, I will after I call my parents (Steve calls his parents then Joe's parents and tells them what station to put it on.
(1 month later on tour. The first concert. The band is back stage)
David- How are you guys doing?
Bob- Good, but nervous.
Steve- Same here.
Joe- I am so nervous. I think I am going to puke on the crowed!

Joe- I can't promise that.

They all think- We've made it!
